A question I am often asked is “what inspired you to set up your own business?”
Well, it all started with a cycle tour! A solo cycle-camping tour across Switzerland and France via the Swiss and French Alps, the Jura Mountains, the Vosges Mountains and through the Champagne region all the way up to Calais. I was taking a Summer sabbatical after leaving a job that hadn’t worked out for me.
After a truly fabulous tour, which was one of the best experiences of my life, I wrote a book about my adventures. As I was writing it, I realised the biggest lesson I’d learnt on the trip was to ‘have courage’. I’d had the courage to attempt something I didn’t even know if I would achieve. Would I be able to lug my bike laden with all that camping and cooking equipment up and down Alpine climbs made famous by the Tour de France? Not knowing should never stop you having a go!
Would I have the courage to set up my own business? It was now or never! When would such a fabulous opportunity present itself again?
It was something I’d wanted to do for many years and yet I’d not had the courage to leave the relative security of paid employment. I’d done well in my career as an accountant, progressing to Finance Director level. How could I use my skills, knowledge and experience, along with (so I’m told!) my enthusiastic and fun personality, for the benefit of many through running my own business?
And so it began!
And so Andi Lonnen Business Associates was born in January 2013. Providing upbeat, highly practical and participative business finance training and coaching is the main focus of our business, making finance accessible to even those apparently terrified of finance and numbers. We also provide part-time Finance Director (FD) services to small businesses who do not yet require the services or expense of a full time FD. Ultimately, the sole purpose of all our services is to improve the financial health and performance of your organisation.
Another extraordinary journey has begun!
My challenge to you!
I challenge everyone reading this to ‘have courage’ themselves and to dare to learn some basic business finance skills – magic can happen when people know how they can contribute to increased sales, improved costs and a healthier cash flow. Who knows, it could be life-changing!
Over to you!
I’d love to know what you have had ‘the courage’ to do. It may seem small, but we all know it isn’t. Please write a comment below. I look forward to hearing from you!
