A lovely quote from Henry Ford, which I hope will help many of you who are getting in contact and say that you’re worried about making mistakes, when you’re really busy at work and you want to get things right for your stakeholders, which of course you do as world-class value-adding Finance Business Partners! 

Henry Ford says, “the only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing”.  

If you’re finding that you are ridiculously busy and starting to make mistakes, what can you learn from that? What can you do differently go forward? Who can you speak to? How can you make sure that these mistakes, especially if they’re simple mistakes that wouldn’t normally be made, how can you make sure that they’re not made going forwards?  

Because remember, we have to earn that trust to sit at the decision-making table.  

Making mistakes is normal.  

It’s just when things are getting overwhelming, that action needs to be taken for that. And if you’re making mistakes in other areas… I say, it’s fine! As long as we learn something from that.  

I know where one of the places I used to work, I used to encourage the finance team to make mistakes to find where things were wrong so that we could rectify it really quickly.  

I wanted to make it safe to make mistakes and then show what action had been taken as a result of that and how things were improving, improving and improving!  

As Henry Ford says “the only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing”.
